What’s So Great About Kale?

Green Kale LeavesKale – that green crinkly stuff that tastes ‘orrid – is enjoying a huge increase in sales. At least in Waitrose it is, where an increase of 122 per cent has been reported as consumers keep on grabbing the nutrient packed ‘super-foods’.

Kale is a good natural source of folic acid, which is important in the early stages of pregnancy. It is also a good source of lutein, a carotenoid with powerful antioxidant properties, important for maintaining healthy vision. Kale is also a good source of fiber, antioxidants vitamins A and C, and the energy releasing B vitamins and is also rich in phytonutrients that are thought to help in the fight against some cancers.

I had a salad during the summer at Pizza Express (I know, I know, a bad idea to start with) that was full of the hardest, sharpest, throat cutting kale I have ever had the misfortune to attempt to eat.

Hotel Chocolate

Hotel Chocolate, Reading Numerous times over the last couple of years have friends and relatives been on the receiving end of Hotel Chocolate gifts. The chocolates have always been well received while the range, gift packs and seasonal specials have never failed to inspire. While I still favour my local chocolatiers, Gorvett and Stone, they do not offer a mail order service.

The company has taken to opening high street stores to supplement their on-line activities. Lucky for me they have just announced a new store opening in the Oracle Shopping Centre in Reading! This new opening brings the total number of stores to 17.

Mocha – online store

Mocha - teaspoon egg cupIt might just be a tad early to think about Christmas? You know gifts and stuff.. or at least collating a list of things you would like for yourself?

Regardless I am plunging ahead and looking at various internet sites… Mocha is right at the top of my list. They describe themselves as “the ultimate destination for contemporary lifestyle products and design-led gifts – at affordable prices”. I love this quirky teaspoon egg cup (currently down from £12.95 to £9.99) and the Geo Expresso Cups, four different geometic shapes, are rather cool too (but expensive at £55!) but for the ‘trendy’ this folding fruit bowl (£35.50) sure is hard to beat.

Mocha – online store. Annoyingly they do not list their delivery charges pre-order.

Ramsey Bashing

At risk of having the Foodie List turning into a Ramsey-bashing organ, The Observer reports that Gordon Ramsey has a new claim to fame. He has just been named the scariest man on television. Celebrity Week confirms the award but also reports that he has hurt himself in a ‘delicate area’ while bullfighting in Spain. He was trying to escape from a bull at the time.

Win Tickets to the BBC Good Food Show

Maybe meeting Gordon Ramsey isn’t high on your list of goals; or maybe it is!

Either way the chance to win £500 to spend at the BBC Good Food Show plus a pair of entry tickets in an incredibly easy to enter competition is worth enduring a backstage meet with Mr Ramsey. The Times is running the competition; the question is What Type Of Food Is Fusilli?

Wadda yer mean you don’t know!?

Competition closes on the 27th October. You need to enter a code, which is X5197.
