Chester Pancake Day Cheese Rolling

Chester Cheese RollingOn Pancake Day this coming Feb 24th, Chester city centre will host the eighth annual Cheese Rolling Competition. However, this year, it will be followed by a traditional Pancake Race, creating a ‘Flipping Fantastic’ day of activities…

Council leaders will start the events by passing a wheel of Cheshire cheese around the city Walls. The race, where home team Cheshire is hoping to retain the world-renowned cheese rolling title for a record sixth year running against mature competition from Stilton, Made In Cheshire and Cheshire Cheese Ladies Team, will start at 11am by The Cross, Bridge Street.

As cheese rolling lands on Shrove Tuesday, the Festival organisers have added an extra event to the programme: Pancake Race Day will see local businesses prove their pancake tossing skills while negotiating an obstacle course to win a coveted golden frying pan.

Although the Chester Food & Drink Festival takes place from April 4 to April 18 this pancake/cheese rolling is the opening event of the festival.

South African Plums

south african plumsNow in season – and damn healthy to boot.

If you’re feeling the effects of the harsh winter, a Plum Detox drink could be just the thing, and the following recipe makes enough for four. Take four halved stoned plums, a skinned, cored and diced pear, a pomegranate and 300ml of apple juice. Place the plums and pear into a blender and add the apple juice. Slice the top off the pomegranate with a sharp knife and spoon the seeds into the blender. Whizz ’til smooth and proceed bask in its succulent virtue.

Or perhaps you’d prefer an unusually fruity antidote to these still-brittle mornings. You would? Then it’s time you had your oats! Plum Porridge puts an exotic spin on a breakfast staple, and whipping up a batch for four couldn’t be simpler.

Fair Trade Fortnight 25th Feb – 9th March 2009

Freetrade Fortnight 2009Two billion people – a third of humanity – still survive on less than $2 a day. Unfair trade rules keep them in poverty, but they face the global challenges of food shortages and climate change too. Fairtrade is a people’s movement for change that aims to tip the balance of trade in favour of poor producers. We all need Fairtrade more than ever and we all have the power to create positive change for people and planet.

Make it happen. Choose Fairtrade.

Take part in Fairtrade Fortnight 2009 and play your part by joining a powerful global movement for change!

And taking part is easy – either buy a bottle or two of BeeWyched from Oxfordshires Wychwood Brewery, made from free trade honey from Chile and Fairtrade sugars from Malawi (available from Morrisons, Asda, Waitrose) – or eat a freetrade banana at Noon on the 6th.

The latter is a country-wide event and you can register your eating event and post it on an interactive map.

Pancake Day Crêperama

Creme de la CrepeOn Tuesday 24th February, Crème de la Crêpe is hosting the first ever ‘Crêperama’ at Covent Garden’s Market Building to find the best crêpe creator in London. Covent Garden’s Crêperama offers an evening of crêpe-fuelled frolics, and the chance to win free crêpes for a year.

Battle it out in front of a panel of judges to win the crêpe-making crown and prove that it’s flipping easy to invent the perfect crêpe. Judges will be marking in three categories: flare, presentation and most importantly – taste.

Come 6pm be at the Market Building, where crêpes and fillings will be at the ready – or if you’re really serious, you can bring your own. Although why they couldn’t call it a pancake-athon I just don’t know…

When: 24th February
Where: Covent Garden Piazza
Time: 6pm
