Get Your Family Healthy From Inside Out This Summer

howto_videoWith less than 8 weeks to go until the kids break up from school and the summer holidays officially begin – millions of us are already getting our bodies ship-shape for the beach. But while this may be boosting self esteem and giving us a much needed feel-good factor, we should also consider the impact our diet can have on the inside, where it really counts.

While we are increasingly aware of the dangers of eating too much saturated fat, according to a new report over eight in ten Brits are still putting their health at risk by exceeding the Food Standards Agency’s Recommended Daily Allowance of 20g per day for women (30g per day for men).

Eating too much saturated fat increases blood cholesterol levels and thus the risk of heart disease. However research by independent dietary advisory body The Fat Panel reveals that one in ten Brits are still getting more than 18% of their daily calories from this dietary ‘baddie’ compared with the recommended target of 11%.

According to the Cabinet Office, if everyone reduced their intake to the Government’s recommended levels a staggering 3,500 lives could be saved each year across the UK. Starting this week, if we all took a few simple steps to cut our saturated fat intake, the health benefits could make huge differences to our lives.

We all know the typical foods that contain high levels of saturated fat – such as fatty cuts of meat, butter, cheese, whole milk and pastries. However even foods we tend to think of as non-fatty can also contain saturated fat – there can be a lot of it in yoghurt and in and under chicken skin, for example. Whether it be eating low-fat dairy products, grating cheese instead of slicing it, or reading food labels correctly – there are simple steps we can all take to reduce saturated fat levels in both our own and our family’s daily diet.

To help you get started in the run up to summer, to actually be as healthy as you’d like to look, have a look at this The Fat Panel’s video of ten easy but potentially life-saving tips.

Have You Got What It Takes To Spot A Turkey Winner?

turkeyDo you ever look at award-winning foods when you go shopping and think – what makes that one special? Well now’s your chance to find out.

The British turkey industry is offering a member of the public a place on the judging panel of its prestigious annual British Turkey Awards. Liking turkey is the only essential requirement – along with the other judges, you will have to poke, prod, and taste more than 100 different dishes before selecting the winners of each of the 12 categories!

The other members of the judging panel come from the world of media but the organisers are keen to also have someone who shops, cooks and eats turkey in “real life”. There is good reward for all the hard work, though. The person selected to the judging panel will enjoy a glittering night out as a guest of honour at the awards ceremony in Claridge’s Ballroom.

Apparently full details of how to enter should be on www.britishturkey.co.uk although at the time of writing I can’t find anything!
