70’s Food Back In Vogue

When exactly did cheesecake become a 1970’s relic, consigned to the kitsch dustbin and now due for a revival?

Prawn cocktails and Black Forest gateau I can understand but cheesecake? Apparently these dishes are spearheading a surge in retro foods. The Independent reports that sales of Black Forest gateau, tiramisu, profiteroles and apple strudel, are up almost a fifth in a year. Cheesecake has seen sales rise by 46 per cent. They conclude:

A lot of the people who are doing the family shopping now were children in the Seventies so there is the nostalgia element of people wanting to have what they enjoyed in their childhood.

Black Forest gateau was given the Heston Blumenthal treatment a few weeks ago in the Times and I have seen profiteroles appear on more than one restaurant menu recently. So back to the ’70’s we go!
