Christmas Delivery Charges to Rise

OcadoYou would have thought that the massive increase in the average spend at the supermarkets would be more than adequate to sedate their money-grasping ways. But no.

The Telegraph is reporting today that Tesco and Ocado have increased their home delivery charges.

Ocado has increased its normal weekday delivery charge from £3/£4 to £9.

Tesco has increased its charge from £4.50 to £5.99.

Jason Gissing, the co-founder of Ocado is quoted as denying that he was taking advantage of the festive rush to charge his customers more. “No, I don’t think it’s cheeky, and I certainly don’t think it’s profiteering”.

Ocado customers planning on waiting until Christmas Eve to ensure the freshest ingredients will be out of luck; all their delivery slots are booked up.

Being a regular weekly user of Ocado’s services for I don’t know how many years I was really shocked at the £8 delivery charge for my normal £1 Monday morning slot - just because it happens to fall on Xmas Eve! What Ocado seem to have forgotten is that I still need to feed my family (3 children, 2 adults) no matter what time of the year it is and to cash in on the festive season is simply awful.

I did email them to ask for justification of the 800% increase and was told it was because they have more festive foods on offer and workload was higher - but surely if they are selling more and making more profit why the need for the 800% rise? If it wasn’t for the fact I have a newborn baby, a 2 year old and a 6 year old and I work from home plus do all the other duties a mother does I would cancel and go shopping - but my sanity wouldn’t hold up to Xmas Supermarket Shopping. So well done Ocado for having all your regular loyal customers over a barrel with this one!
