Around these ‘ere parts there is a large Polish community; several newly close friends are Polish who have, incidentally, supplied me with a good repertoire of Polish swear words! My culinary adventures into Polish cuisine have not been totally successful. My Makowiec was nearly there (but I lost the improved recipe from a reader in a computer crash) and my pierniki turned out too dry to be edible.
Now of course we are braced for an influx from Romania and Bulgaria who, we can only hope, will bring an equally rich food culture with them too. A quick over view on the BBC highlights Mamaliga, Ciorba de perisoare and Mititei from Romania and Lyutenitsa, Lukanka and Banitsa from Bulgaria.
More exciting foods to explore along with new swear words too perhaps!

Just go buy some smoked sausages, mustard and vodka. All you need to be Eastern European ; )
My wife will kill me now I said that. I love the food really!
Romanian food is delicious! Mamaliga is a staple and served instead of bread with almost every meal. You can even eat it the next day with by breaking it up in your ciorba de perisoare (meatball soup), frying it in butter (or lard…delectable, but unhealthy) and eating for breakfast with fruit, preserves, or maple syrup. Romanian desserts will begin showing up also, and those are even better than Heaven.
