OK so this news item isn’t concerned with delicatessens or artisan producers but interesting none-the-less. Down in Dorset, The Cranford Heath Asda store, is set to be the first UK supermarket to recycle, reuse or compost all of its waste rather than send it to landfill.
Asda announced in July that it planned to make all its stores fully ‘recycled’ by 2010. They announced a huge reduction of waste from 2001 to 2005 (from 140,000 tones down to 88,000) while increasing the number of stores by 70.
“Landfill sites in the UK are gradually running out of capacity, which means we need to find innovative and more environmentally friendly ways to dispose of our waste,” said Simon Fern, environment manager at Asda.
