Hotel Chocolate

Hotel Chocolate, Reading Numerous times over the last couple of years have friends and relatives been on the receiving end of Hotel Chocolate gifts. The chocolates have always been well received while the range, gift packs and seasonal specials have never failed to inspire. While I still favour my local chocolatiers, Gorvett and Stone, they do not offer a mail order service.

The company has taken to opening high street stores to supplement their on-line activities. Lucky for me they have just announced a new store opening in the Oracle Shopping Centre in Reading! This new opening brings the total number of stores to 17.

Unfortunately, I’ve been reasonably uninspired by Hotel Chocolate. There is one of their shops here in Cambridge (which has been here at least as long as I have) which is - for want of a better word - sterile. All the chocolates are pre-packaged and none are out to PYO. Nothing to taste or nibble on and expensive (especially since I don’t get to try before I buy). I prefer Thornton’s (which are just a few doors down) with their cute little boxes and trays upon trays of delights. Their chocolate tastes better as well.

I haven’t been to Hotel Chocolate’s website so maybe that is worth a try - maybe my opinion will turn around.

Oh you surprise me. I was expecting just that - trays of chocs to mix your own box. My experience has only been via ordering mixed cases online; I’ve not actually eaten any myself or been to any of the shops.

I have been on the receiving end of a box from Hotel Chocolat last Christmas and I must say that the chocolates are not that spectacular. Lindt chocolates are still far superior, imho.
