In Search Of The Best Easter Egg

Hotel Chocolate Easter Egg

As a kid there was always that searing feeling of disappointment at Easter. OK so you received plenty of chocolate; but how disappointing were those fancy packages – tons of glittery wrapping and the thinest chocolate ever. And if the egg was actually empty… as for those who brought the damn things they were equally unhappy having paid for so much wrapping and the same amount of chocolate found in a standard bar.

A few years have passed since those days of course but from what I see the Easter Egg market hasn’t changed all that much. I need an egg though for someone special, someone grown up and, lets be honest, one with a sophisticated palate and higher expectations than your average 7 year old!

I stumbled into the Hotel Chocolate Store in Reading last week – and discovered a fine array of classy looking chocs. Plenty to tempt the chocolate lover this Easter but the £18 Exuberantly Fruity Egg stood out.

One look at this 40% milk chocolate shell with its zingy raspberry white chocolate splash and you’ll have a good idea of the natural fruitiness waiting inside. Crisp chocolate shells filled with vivacious cream ganaches including peach & raspberry, blackcurrant, strawberry, redcurrant, mango and apricot. Rolled in real fruit powder for extra tantalising zippiness.

Minimalist packaging, an extra thick shell and stuffed with real fruit truffles. I should also mention that the shell has a “ripple of raspberry and white chocolate” running through it. Delicious.

I am a chocolatier, I make chocolate Easter eggs filled with a creamy chocolate fudge. Some are covered inside with caramel and pecans others have walnuts and other things. Not just your fruit and nut egg. Each egg is dipped in the finest chocolate and weighs around a 1/2lb each. Name your flavor. These can be found at Wishes Etc. in
Gurnee, Illinois.PH>847-263-3237, Just ask for Barb’s Fudge eggs

    You’ll luv em,

I like to go for the very big eggs with the extra thick shell. The ones about the size of a rugby ball and take a week to get through.

  3. I sampled this one too – and can confirm it’s delicious. The extra thick shell is so delicious that I ate it in just over one day though!

    Hi there,

I saw your entry titled “In Search of The Best Easter Egg”
and thought the following could be of interest.

I walked into Selfridges’ Food Hall on Saturday and saw an amazing
and quite unbelievable Easter egg by Belgian Chocolatier Godiva. After
having harassed the shop assistant to give me some more details, it
apparently weighs 2.4KG, is made up of 6 different shells and is filled
with a miniature version of what seems like Godiva’s entire range of
Easter goodies. It really needs to be seen (and tasted) to be believed as, not only is
it huge, it is also beautiful to look at and scrumptious to eat!

Love the blog, keep up the good work!

    Nicholas

Sounds just stunning Nicholas – you don’t mention a price though…

Andrew, found out a bit more about the egg…it’s a Limited Edition version, is called the Golden No5 Nougatine Egg and is priced at a mind-boggling £125! However, for you discerning foodies out there looking for a slightly more affordable Easter Egg,Godiva also has its No3 Nougatine Egg which weighs 945g, is filled with 36 chocolates and is priced at £62.00. Godiva’s website, http://www.godiva.be, has all the information needed, as well as pictures to make you salivate! Happy Easter everyone…

I’m for Belgian chocolate such as Leonidas or Cote d’Or, not Godiva, because I don’t like them but I saw last week that Hotel Chocolate has interesting packages at interesting prices for Easter :-)

This Egg certainly is a treat to watch. A Complete masterpiece that has been sculpted to perfection. I just could not have enough of this one and have ordered three more that come in Milk and White Chocolate (http://www.hotelchocolat.co.uk/White-Chocolate-Egg-P450116/) varieties. Hope to keep them till Easter but cannot ensure that I will be able to resist the temptation.
