John Lewis Opens First Foodhall at Flagship Store
John Lewis today opened the doors of its first Foodhall at the Oxford Street flagship store, which is now in the final stages of a £64 million revamp.
The 17,000 square foot Foodhall is situated in the architecturally striking basement space of the seven-floor department store. The concept, which was developed in partnership with Waitrose, is influenced in design by the trendy food halls of Tokyo’s department stores as well as stylish Swiss food emporiums and the gastronomic Parisian food boutiques. It will cater for foodies in search of seasonal speciality foods, commuters shopping for gourmet ready to heat meals, as well as local and visiting shoppers wanting to top up on everyday groceries.
Says Andy Street, Managing Director of John Lewis, ‘The Oxford Street shop now feels complete, after 143 years of trading! It’s always been seen as the ultimate one stop shop for Londoners and visitors to the capital, but now we are able to satisfy all their entertaining needs. The Foodhall concept is certainly something that will feature in our future growth plans, with our Cardiff department store confirmed as the next Foodhall target.’
The overall refurbishment of John Lewis Oxford Street has seen the introduction of two atria with new escalators, both at the front and back of the building, designed to increase ease of shopper flow around the extensive 300,000 square foot store. It has also resulted in more selling space for beauty, menswear and ladies’ fashions as well as the opening of two new striking eateries.
