Tanqueray BA175This month a cocktail by the UK’s Bartender of the Year 2013, Gareth Evans, will be unveiled for service in the British Airways Concorde Room, at London Heathrow Terminal 5. Offering a luxurious taste of the capital’s incredible cocktail scene, guests will be able to enjoy Gareth’s aperitif, the Tanqueray BA175 pre-flight.

The cocktail, named The Tanqueray BA175, will be served in an elegant champagne flute with equal 25ml measures of pink grapefruit juice, apricot liquor and Tanqueray No. TEN gin topped with champagne. Offering a playful twist on the classic French 75, the delicately balanced aperitif was created by Gareth in 2013 as he succeeded in the rigorous search to find the UK World Class Bartender of the Year.

Gareth Evans says,

“It is an honour to have my cocktail served in this iconic destination within Heathrow. When people started flying many years ago it was common to enjoy cocktails on board and pre-flight. It’s great that British Airways is celebrating our current ‘golden era’ for cocktails by supporting World Class and serving world class cocktails in their Concorde Room.”

The cocktail is being served to mark the second consecutive year World Class™ and British Airways have partnered to find the UK World Class™ Bartender of the Year as part of the global World Class competition.

cocktails-in-the-cityCocktails in the City returns to Leeds on April 10th, for one night only, in the stunning surroundings of Leeds Town Hall where cocktail lovers and Leeds finest bars will gather together for an evening dedicated to the art of cocktail making.

Without doubt Cocktails in the City is the UK’s greatest cocktail night, showcasing the greatest bars and the greatest cocktails with venues such as Harvey Nichols, The Maven, Jakes Bar and Still Room and The Alchemist with many more involved it is an event not to be missed!

Guests can enjoy amazing food from the highly respected Chaophraya Restaurant, music supplied by the show’s sponsor Capital FM and a host of live cocktail demonstrations on the main stage. With wandering magicians, complimentary massages from Oulton Hall and a beauty SOS area provided by Harvey Nichols, Cocktails in the City is an evening of sophisticated fun with friends and colleagues and one of the best nights out you will have in 2014.

Successfully launched in Leeds in 2013 every venue creates their own “pop up” bar where visitors can learn how to create a special signature cocktail created specifically for the show.

Other Cocktails in the City events for your diary include: Manchester, London and Edinburgh. Last year over 10,000 cocktails were poured throughout all Cocktails in the City’s UK events, and this year promises to be bigger and better.

Valentine’s Day Gin Cocktails

Tanqueray  gin cocktailsTanqueray Raspberry and Lavender fizz
Ingredients:
25ml Tanqueray London Dry
15ml Lavender Liqueur (Raspberry liqueur also optional)
Top with Prosecco
4 x Fresh Raspberries

Method: shake all ingredients together and pour into a coupette, top with prosecco and garnish with a raspberry or rose petal

Ingredients:
35ml Tanqueray London Dry
15ml Raspberry Syrup
20ml Fresh Lemon Juice
Dash of Egg White

Method: shake all ingredients together and strain into a martini glass, garnish with a raspberry

For one night only, thirty of London’s top bars from East to West and North to South come together to offer over 1000 cocktail enthusiasts serve over 2,000 cocktails in an interactive evening of cocktail education and fun. Launched in Manchester, Edinburgh and Bristol 2012 saw over 1000 visitors to the show with more than 4000 cocktails being made around the country and in 2013 Cocktails in the City predicts over 2500 visitors will enjoy the event nationwide. At each event Cocktails in the City hosts the cities top bars partnered by leading UK spirit brands to provide visitors with an interactive cocktail making experience allowing them to learn more about the art of cocktail making, discover drinks brands and learn more about the bars in their area.

Internationally renowned as the world’s best city for cocktails, Cocktails in the City has selected a wide range of London bar styles to give consumers a taste of the capitals variety of cocktail haunts from the west end swank of The Ritz and Harvey Nichols Fifth Floor Champagne Bar to the East London cool of The Hawksmoor Bar, The Ivy and Off Broadway to funky South London operators Lost Society Group with The Lost Angel.

All visitors will be able to enjoy live bar demonstrations on the art of cocktail making at home across a variety of styles and tastes from Mad Men and Whisky Drinks to reviving super cool disco drink classics. Enthusiasts and Connoisseurs can upgrade their experience to include an intimate private tutored tasting session from industry experts on Rum, Whiskies and Gin.

No cocktail can be enjoyed without some without the music. Already earmarked the summer of disco, Cocktails in the City brings Horse Meat Disco’s legendary duo James Hillard and Jim Stanton to the decks. Master of Malt Antique Ready-To-Drink CocktailsOnline retailer Master of Malt has launched four new ready-to-drink antique cocktails from the ‘Experimental Series’ bottled by The Handmade Cocktail Company.

Antique cocktails are becoming increasingly popular as mixologists explore the delights of spirits from years-gone-by. These cocktails are a new twist on classic recipes and offer a fascinating insight into drinks history. The ‘Experimental Series’ Antique Cocktails are a selection of four classic drinks: the Negroni, the Manhattan, the Rob Roy and the Martinez – all made by using rare spirits bottled in the 1960s, 1970s and the 1980s.

These antique spirits were often made using different production methods and sources of ingredients to their counterparts today, hence resulting in a different flavour profile.

Furthermore, due to the time spent in bottle, the spirits have oxidised slightly which mellows the spirit, gives it a deeper complexity and adds another tasty dimension to these delicious cocktails.
The Handmade Cocktail Company has made vintage ready-to-drink cocktails since its launch in 2011, and in February 2012 the ‘Experimental Series’ was launched to allow the consumer to influence future releases. Popular bottlings in the Series will then join the full range of products produced by the Handmade Cocktail Company.

Antique Negroni – 1970s – Batch 1 – 20cl/33.7%abv – £41.95
The gin arrives on the palate first before the bittersweet tag-team of sweet vermouth and Campari burst into the party bringing herbs, dried cranberry and nutmeg. Overall: The classic Italian cocktail beautifully delivered with the added cachet of being antique.

Antique Manhattan – 1970s/1980s – Batch 1 – 20cl/39.1%abv ̶ £49.95
At first the whiskey hits the nose hand in hand with the sweet vermouth before cherries and sage wander in with the vaguest hint of white pepper. Cherries and oak notes fill the mouth followed by cinnamon and dried red fruits. Coriander and oregano form a herbaceous finish but it is the bourbon vanilla that clings on for dear life until the very end. This is a delicately balanced Manhattan that creates a product greater than the sum of its parts – plus it’s an antique, what’s more to like?

Antique Rob Roy – 1960s/1970s – Batch 1 – 20cl/38.55abv – £38.95
Maraschino cherries open up first followed by fresh Seville oranges, nectarines and essence of raspberry. Beneath this fruity exterior lies a malty floor harmonising with the sweet vermouth. Sweet fruit, namely cherries and plums, roll over the palate counter-balanced by the bitters and whisky. Bitter oranges and candied citrus peel finish this mouth-wateringly delicious cocktail. The key word for this cocktail is balance. The sweet fresh fruit flavours are intricately complemented by the bitter component. Oh and the ingredients were sourced from the 60s and 70s, that’s pretty cool isn’t it?

Antique Martinez – 1970s – Batch 1 – 20cl/39%abv – £42.95
The nose is dominated by juniper and cherries but tempered with a little orange peel and macerated red fruits. Red grapes, raisins, tangerine zest and baked apples with a smooth, silky mouth feel. A perfect cocktail for those who don’t favour the drier martini or for those who fancy a change. Factor in the antique nature of its ingredients and you have one sublime drink.
