The Supermarket Egg War of 2007
Did you realise there is an inter-supermarket egg war in progress?
ASDA is accusing several of the other big chains of stocking non-British free range eggs. A secret shopper exercise held just before Christmas highlighted Sainsburys, Morrisons and Lidl as stocking free range eggs from Holland, France or Germany. A shortfall in UK production is generally cited as the reason for stocking eggs produced outside the UK and outside the quality levels of the lion mark for food safety and welfare standards.
It is a marketing exercise of course - ASDA claiming they are the first supermarket to stock 100% UK produced eggs, even though Waitrose and Marks & Spencers already do so - but the ideal of quality, home produced foods is an important one.
Look for the Lion Quality mark on the egg shell and egg box - it shows that the eggs have been produced to the highest standards of food safety in the world including a programme of vaccination against Salmonella Enteritidis
