Worcestershire sauce voted Britain’s top food.
That great British stalwart, Worcestershire Sauce, has been voted Britain’s greatest culinary food item.
A survey for UKTV food received 3,523 on-line voters that elevated the sauce to the number one spot as the “British ingredient that has the most influence on global cuisine”. It’s success put down to its wide use in Bloody Mary cocktails.
Worcestershire sauce can originally be traced back to India, when in 1835, Lord Sandys asked two chemists named John Lea and William Perrins to make up the sauce using a recipe he had found on his travels. To be authentic it must be made from vinegar, molasses, cloves, garlic, anchovies and tamarind extract.
The surveys top ten results are
1 Worcestershire Sauce
2 Cheddar Cheese
3 Yorkshire pudding
4 Jellied Eels
5 Clotted Cream
6 Black pudding
7 English mustard
8 scones
9 salad cream
10 mint sauce
