The Somerset company, set up by city boy James Mansfield and farmer’s son James Flower, sells fresh, grass-fed beef and local lamb, pork and organic chicken by post.
The pair rear and butcher their own traditional breed cattle on Home Farm in the Gordano Valley, the Flower family have been farming for five generations. And the former Royal Agricultural College students say their meat boxes are a cut above the rest - allowing customers nationwide to select their own content at the click of a mouse.
Londoner James Mansfield (27) said: “We believe our service is unique as, unlike our competitors, we encourage online shoppers to build their own monthly boxes. Customers simply choose from each of three categories - joints; steaks and chops; and the field&flower pantry, which offers everyday treats such as sausages, burgers and mince.
“As well as our own home-reared beef, we offer lamb, pork and organic chicken sourced from neighbouring farms. With our easy-to-use website, you don’t have to search the supermarkets - you can rely on us for great-tasting, top quality meat every month.”
The new website allows customers to create their own monthly meat boxes from just £55 for a small field&flower box with free delivery (there’s no obligation or tie-in) and people can easily change the content of their box on a monthly basis for ultimate flexibility. A small field&flower box provides a minimum of 15 meals. There’s also an option to place one-off orders with no minimum spend from the field&flower online farm shop.
Recipe suggestions and cooking instructions are included with every box and the meat, which is hung on the bone to achieve maximum flavour, is delivered fresh.
field&flower are already making a name for themselves in the industry and have delivered 1,000 boxes in their first year after building their customer base via word of mouth, at food shows and through their pop-up kitchens at festivals and private parties. And their hard work has paid off. The company has just been listed in The Good Produce Guide 2011 by influential food writer Rose Prince, who said: “The quality is truly remarkable. Their burgers are rich and juicy and the spicy beef sausages are a tasty alternative to pork.”
The company has been selling its meat at London’s famous Borough market, the Real Food Festival and Taste of London festivals.
James Flower (24) added: “We maybe an online business, but we want to assure our customers we are just a phone call away and happy to answer any questions. The personal touch is a key part of our service.”
