A January ‘detox’ Can Do More Harm Than Good

AOK - red grape, cherry, aloe vera and ginger drinkFeeling bloated after too much bubbly? Partied out? Stuffed after too much Christmas cake and turkey sandwiches? Stuart Roberts, nutritionist and founder of antioxidant juice AOk Drinks, confirms recent media reports that short-term detox programmes, typically a January detox, to ‘flush out your system’ are a waste of time and money.

“Do-it-yourself detox kits are widely available to buy, but your body has its own incredible detoxification system known as your liver and kidneys. DIY kits can cause more harm than good, particularly if your body has become accustomed to over-indulgence over a long period of time. The body can go into shock if you go from one extreme to another.

“Quick fixes are not the answer to long-term health improvements. Instead, I recommend small lifestyle changes that you can incorporate into your daily life throughout the year – rather than just focusing on January. You can increase the amount of fruit and vegetables you eat by adding chopped fruit and nuts to your morning cereal or making a winter salad for a lighter evening meal. You can try cutting out processed foods particularly those containing saturated and trans (man-made) fats. I also recommend walking more regularly, avoiding sitting down for long periods of time without moving, drinking more water, upping your vitamin and antioxidant intake and, when possible, getting more quality sleep during the night,” says Stuart Roberts.

“There are no quick-fixes to health and nutrition, however, there are small steps that we can take that add up to massive changes in how we look and feel.”

AOk is a red grape, cherry, aloe vera and ginger drink, with a hint of vanilla. One 250ml bottle of AOk provides your daily recommendation of antioxidants (nutritionists recommend 3,000-5,000 per day and AOk contains 3,600) and just 145 calories.

Stuart created the drink in 2008 to provide a synergistic combination of antioxidant packed ingredients. Designed to meet consumer demands for healthy convenience, the drink is a tasty alternative to mainstream flavours and offers an original flavour.

Stuart Roberts says: “Antioxidants are vital in our diets. With most things, consistency makes the difference. Consuming your ‘five-a-day’ and recommended amount of antioxidants (which can help prevent injury and muscle soreness after exercise too) will all add up to make you look and feel better over time.”

AOk retails for £1.69 per 250ml bottle and is available at selected Waitrose stores nationwide (http://www.aokdrinks.com/antioxidants/file/stores.php), Waitrose.com and Ocado.com.

Nakd Bars!

Brace yourself! I’ve just discovered three of the greatest new healthy snack bars of all time: Nākd Cocoa Delight, Nākd Cocoa Mint and Nākd Berry Delight. (Although I didn’t really like the mint version, having an aversion to the combination of mint and chocolate, but others loved them). The manufactueres believe they are going to take the healthy snacking market by storm.

So what’s the big difference from other bars? Nearly all so-called ‘healthy’ snack bars on the market rely on intense heat-processing, refined sugary syrups and mysterious additives. Take a look for yourself; your typical cereal bar, for example, has between 15 to 30 ingredients, many of which are completely unrecognisable and several of which are often just various types of sugar. Despite what decades of slick marketing and packaging seeks to imply, heavily processed, syrup-laden and additive filled is not a credible recipe for ‘healthy’.

These new Nākd bars, on the other hand, are made with a wholefood approach. Instead of heavy processing, sugary syrups and mysterious additives, Nākd bars rely on raw fruit, nuts and natural flavours rolled together. That’s it. Simply wholefoods rolled together and nothing else. Literally, any more natural and you’d have to peel them. Consequently, they are genuine nutritional powerhouses bursting with natural raw nutrients, are wheat, dairy and gluten free, vegan and count towards one of your five a day. They are as different health-wise from most snack bars as freshly squeezed orange juice is from fizzy orange.

And they actually taste fantastic! Flavourful and satisfying – almost too good to be true; you have to taste them to believe it!

Nākd bars are widely available in Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Waitrose, Boots, Holland & Barrett and independent health food shops.

Nākd Cocoa Mint Ingredients: Raw dates, raw cashews, raw raisins, cocoa, natural flavour
Nākd Cocoa Delight Ingredients: Raw dates, raw cashews, raw raisins, cocoa, natural flavour

Ethically traded and containing no added flavours, colours or preservatives, the flower power drink boasts 17 times more antioxidants than other juice drinks on the market and has been linked to a variety of health-giving properties, including lowering blood pressure, helping decrease cholesterol and warding off urinary tract infection.

Whoopie for Elvis

Elvis. The 20th Century’s greatest performer had it all.

Talent, good looks, charisma. And a penchant for peanut butter, honey, bacon and banana sandwiches which were browned in a frying pan.

It’s a concoction that’s immortalised as the Elvis (or sometimes the Memphis) across many States of the US.

And so in tribute to the memory of a legendary fellow Mississippian, celebrated artisan bakery Outsider Tart presents its spin on a classic snack - the Elvis Whoopie Pie.

Two large soft cakey baps are sandwiched together with a thick creamy filling of peanut butter, honey and the very best pancetta.

“Elvis’s fondness for peanut butter and banana sandwiches is legendary. Our Whoopie pie version is more than fit for a King. I’d certainly have it as my last meal.” says Chief Froster David Muniz.

US style boutique bakers Outsider Tart were the first to start selling Whoopie Pies in the UK this time last year.

The hockey puck size pies, a classic Amish snack, come in seven other flavours including chocolate and oatmeal and pumpkin, and retail at £3 each.

The Elvis is now available from Outsider Tart’s Chiswick store, London Farmers Markets, or you can order via phone or the website. Delivery is available across the London area.

Regulator Squashes Smoothie Doubts

innocent_smoothiesWith so many conflicting messages in the press these days about what is and isn’t good for you, it’s no wonder we feel confused about what we can do to keep our bodies healthy.

And with less than one third of Brits actually getting their 5-a-day (27% of males, 31% of females*), it seems getting your five recommended daily portions of fruit and veg a day is still a bit of a struggle.

Today the Advertising Standards Authority has finally put to bed a dispute over whether a smoothie can count for one or two portions of someone’s 5-a-day. The regulator joins the Food Standards Agency, the British Nutrition Foundation and the Department of Health (which updated its guidelines earlier this year) in confirming that innocent smoothies can count for two of a person’s 5-a-day as each 250ml serving contains the crushed pulp as well as juices of two portions of different types of fruit.

The Department of Health’s 5 A DAY website states: “smoothies may count as a maximum of 2 of your 5 A DAY where they contain both pure 100% fruit juice and all of the edible pulped fruit and/or vegetable … one portion is defined as at least 150mls of fruit juice or 80g of fruit or vegetable.”

With each bottle making up not one but two of your 5-a-day, innocent smoothies are an easy and convenient way to help you get your daily portions of fruit and be a little bit healthier too.

Dr Shilpee Aggarwal, nutritionist for innocent drinks, says “This is good news for the consumer as now The Food Standards Agency, The British Nutrition Foundation, the ASA and most importantly the Department of Health all agree that smoothies can count as two portions of fruit. Smoothies are an easy and tasty way to help people reach their 5-a-day target.”
