Chicken Now RSPCA Campaign
It is not just good ol’ Hugh (and that other bloke) fighting for the welfare of the humble chicken. Now the RSPCA has joined the fray by challenging retailers to sell only higher welfare chicken by 2010.
National newspapers are now carrying adverts containing an open letter to retailers asking them to consider the quality of the meat they source. Additionally, a new website has been created with a petition calling on shops to stock only higher welfare chicken. People are also being urged to make it a New Year’s resolution to only buy these products.
Dr Marc Cooper, RSPCA farm animal scientist, says, “If people knew how the average chicken was treated before it ended up as their Sunday roast, they would probably be disgusted. Currently, some supermarkets are selling chicken meat for as little as £2 per kilo - this can be less than it costs to produce the bird. Selling chicken so cheaply doesn’t provide farmers with enough money to enable or encourage them to rear their birds to standards the RSPCA finds acceptable.
“Eight-hundred and sixty million chickens are reared for their meat in the UK each year.
The majority of these chickens are reared to standards the RSPCA believe are unacceptably low.Help us gather over 50,000 signatures in support of our challenge! We need to demonstrate to supermarkets that their customers also only want welfare-friendly chicken on the shelves.”
You can sign the RSPCA petition on-line. The petition closing date is 12th February I cant quite see how many people have so far signed but just now it looked to be at the 10,000 mark!
